It was dark outside and the sky was clear save for a few whispy clouds here and there. My old blue truck rolled past the 215,000 mile mark while I guided it from leaving the ostensible safety of the road. I was sleepy. After being up for 17 hours, I had a kind of serious urge to sink into my bed and give in for the day. I pulled into a large gas station and walked inside to wake-up a bit. One small Red Bull and a apple fritter; I was road ready. After another mile I began to notice the sky was glowing with blue lights. I topped a small hill and immediately felt a sense of reverence for the unfolding situation. There were at least 20 police cars and 10 fire trucks all huddled in a wild frenzy no doubt surrounding even more chaos. When I reached the closest point I was able to make out the center of attention. A small red 4 door car twisted into unimaginable proportions. My heart sank. Someone had died tonight or so it looked. The gravity of that thought seemed to grow with each moment. Even though I did not know the victim(s) I felt an obligation to feel sadness for the occupants and their family. I turned onto the interstate ramp and accelerated cautiously. The life flight helicopter surprised me as it darted from over the trees and passed low overheard with it’s curious search light. Chills came across my body and the hair on my neck rose. It is dark, it is late, it is Friday night yet look at all these human beings who came to help this unknown person(s). What an incredible asset to being a part of our species. It’s not as if all these first responders waited to know the identity of those involved before dispatching to the scene. They all came eagerly and quickly. An accident, a phone call. a radio message, a 100 friends come in minutes. How amazing to be living in a place where your status may give you access to many high class things but it’s not even considered when your car leaves the safety of the road late at night. Professionals will come without hesitation to preserve one thing we all have in common. Our human life.
